Cancer Focus NI Visit to P1-P3
It's not often a larger than life sized goat appears in your class, so when it does you tend to pay attention. This was the case this week in school when Cancer Focus Northern Ireland brought "Genevieve" in to visit our P1 & P2 Children, Genevieve, is a life-sized goat who encourages our younger children to eat more fruit and vegetables and to take regular exercise.

Genevieve plays the leading role in the 'Starring Genevieve' book, an educational resource developed by Cancer Focus Northern Ireland.

Mr. Keith Wysner commented to a local press reporter, "We were delighted to welcome Genevieve back to Knockloughrim Primary School. She has an important message for all our children and their families and our children are captivated by the story she has to tell.

Claire Smith, Programme manager for Schools and Young People said: "The story of Genevieve and her friends has been designed to introduce healthy lifestyle messages to children at an age when research shows that they are most receptive. "Poor nutrition and lack of physical activity have been shown to lead to obesity and an increased risk of cancers and other serious health conditions." Experts believe that around a third of all cancer deaths could be prevented by improved nutrition.

The 'Starring Genevieve' resources enable us to bring key health messages to local primary school children. We want to reduce children's future risk of cancer through the positive messages of eating well and taking regular exercise - it's about making the healthy option the fun option!"
