Mindfulness Glitter Jar Experiment

16th May 2021

As it was Mental Awareness Week, Miss Gibson got us all thinking about things we can do when we feel sad. The P4's got busy and came up with great ideas. Here are some of our ideas:

  • Just Smile
  • Do something that you enjoy
  • Tell someone what is wrong
  • We should just walk away

Miss Gibson then showed us a visual aid of what our mind is like. She used three different colours of glitter to represent our feelings, our thoughts and our behaviour. They all went into a jar filled with water. Miss Gibson told us things that may make us get angry or annoyed and how by shaking the jar, it showed us what our minds are like during this time. The glitter was moving very fast and furious inside the jar.  Miss Gibson taught us a breathing technique to help us calm our thoughts when we feel sad, angry or annoyed at things. By the time we had finished this new technique, the glitter inside the jar had settled.  This little activity explained that we need to take time to ourselves and focus on our breathing as this will help us feel settled and calm again.

The P4's were eager to get showing this experiment to everyone at home.
